and felt like I was in a rut

I had been a sole trader for 11 years, and felt like I was in a rut. I was going through the motions year after year. I had a good business but I wasn't challenged anymore. I didn't have any new business ideas and felt that starting a new business as a sole trader was a risk that I did not want to take. I purchased the Educated Franchisee book. For the first time I realized the person Rick was describing in the book was me. I had always thought that franchising was a dirty word. When I read Ricks book I realized how wrong I was and I finally felt like I had found my new path. I wanted to be a franchisee and benefit from the support and proven system of a franchise. As a single parent with full time care of my son I seek the reduced risk of business as a franchisee. I have had multiple meets with frachisors since reading the book, and the feedback I have received from the franchisor has been very positive. During meets I can demonstrate that I understand how the franchise relationship works, which places me at an advantage compared with people who have not read the book. I am currently searching opportunities and hope to find the right one soon. This book has helped me enormously and directed me in the right path.

Best place to start your research

I really enjoyed this book. I'm new to the idea of launching a franchise and needed a book to help structure my research.

Rick's book helps aspiring franchisees break down their research into 3 parts. Part one looks at business ownership and how to determine if it's right for you. I have already done a lot of my own work in this area, but it was good to brush over my mindset again.

Part two deals with the examination of a franchise. I found this the most useful as I had no road map or knowledge of what I should be focussing on. Also, Rick has some interesting content on his website that will help you build a plan to collect all the necessary data from franchise owners and franchisors. After reading the book and the web content I was able to professionally interview all the key people and collect all the necessary data for my research.

Part three deals with making the decision after collecting all this data, key people to assist you and financing your business.

Overall, if you're serious about being a franchisee this book it the best place to start.

A Powerful Resource

The Educated Franchisee is as it's name implies is targeted towards those considering the purchase of a franchise. And, I would highly recommend this book to any potential franchisee. The book offers a step by step road map that will undoubtedly save the new franchisee from making costly mistakes. And, unlike many books on franchising, The Educated Franchisee provides a very realistic assessment of both the advantages and disadvantages of buying into a franchise system. I would describe the author as less 'cheerleader" and more 'concerned coach", although just like any great coach, he does provide encouragement and inspiration. I purchased the book as part of my learning process to begin a new career in franchise development and sales, and I believe my learning curve was shortened substantially as a result. I feel like The Educated Franchisee provided a solid foundation for my career transition. Quotes from Mark Twain, Henry Ford, and even Theodor S. Geisel (Dr. Seuss) are interespersed throughout the book, and make for a very lively read. That the author is very knowledgeable of the subject matter is very obvious, but just as important is the sense of integrity that runs deeply through the entire book.

A good primer on mobile commerce experiences

This book is a primer on building a mobile commerce experience for designers, developers and product managers. It shows the audience how to meet the challenges in mobile commerce through user experience best practices. It covers major mobile payment frameworks including NFC, cloud and closed loop, and examines the pros and cons of popular payment apps such as Google Wallet, Isis, Square and PayPal. It also explains how to design efficient POS interactions using NFC, QR or geolocations and how to build trust into the mobile payments. Walk-throughs and demos of mobile payment interactions including both successful and unsuccessful scenarios are also provided. Payment flow basics + incorporating other conveniences that can fuel further growth in mobile wallet app usage / adoption

This well written primer goes over some good but basic principles for designing payment flows in mobile wallet apps to make them as secure and seamless as possible for the consumer / shopper. The author provides useful graphics and screen shots of existing consumer-focused mobile wallet apps (such as those from Google, Starbucks, and LevelUp) to illustrate the points he's making regarding "good" and "not-so-good" user interface and payment flow "features", and also discusses the pro's and con's of supporting technologies such as NFC (Near Field Communication), bar- or QR- codes, and geolocation.

The discussion then moves to a prognostication on interesting ways mobile wallet apps can be extended in the future, all involving integration with several other services to provide even more conveniences for and handy information to a consumer / shopper. Overall, a very good and informative read.

Understand the numbers - Make better decisions...

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field.

I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes.

This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization.

If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....

Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

kudos to the authors!!!

Best place to start your finance education!

Great book to introduce you to the key concepts of finance, as they apply to every person in a company. If you're working in finance, you likely already know this information, but if you're in any other department, it is the perfect book. Easy to read, easy to understand, and I have been able to apply the ideas right away. I wish this was the introductory text in MBA programs - great place to start, as finance is, more than anything, a language. I am in sales and found the ideas a great reminder of how to position the financial value of by products. I encourage anyone who wants to get ahead in their job to read this, and then think about your company and how to apply the ideas. In this day and age, financial intelligence is critical to getting ahead!
