Stacey Barr knows more about the practice of performance measurement than anyone else I know -- including myself! "Practical Performance Measurement" is an incredible, readable, and comprehensive book on performance measurement that left me amazed by her virtuosity on the subject. Stacey's PuMP model is simple, but effective, and will help any practitioner measure better. Read this book and apply it. I promise you that it will become an invaluable resource. I just loved this book

I just loved this book. I have been following Stacy's blog for a few months now. Almost every page is filled with insights, I have highlighted atleast a few lines on almost every page in the book. Initially I thought the the book was a bit expensive at 59 USD. But I tell you its worth every dollar.

A must-read if you influence objective-setting in your organization

I first heard about Stacey Barr from a business process management instructor/practitioner, who described her as “the guru of KPIs”. In 2012, I started following her Measure-Up blog, where I discovered that name was really a misnomer. While Stacy’s blog gives good tips about how to identify meaningful KPIs, her approach encompasses so much more than that. Stacey treats performance measurement as an end-to-end, repeatable process which measures how an organization is doing against its strategy and then identifies areas for process improvement when falling short of clearly-defined goals.
The structure of this book is an easy-to-follow eight-step guide to design, build and implement a process to measure performance. It even provides steps for getting management buy-in to revisit the performance measurement process to begin with. From a practical perspective, I have started small. Using my team mates as guinea pigs, I have challenged them to come up with team objectives that are not task-based, but describe what success looks like so we will know how to measure it. Following Stacey’s PuMP methodology, the objective “Build a sales dashboard” is transformed to what result that dashboard is intended to produce: “A single view of the customer and key sales data are available in one place to enable management decision making.” (No doubt Stacey would come up with something even better, but I’m still learning.)
The one step that I think large organizations may find challenging is using a “Measures Gallery” to share proposed measures. The methodology calls for an open-house approach to gaining buy-in from management and staff before implementing new KPIs. Working for a global organization with a highly decentralized workforce, I struggle to see how to apply this step by-the-book. I would like to see some practical advice on how to leverage social channels for achieving a similar result. Ignoring that, organizations of any size can benefit from rethinking their approach to performance measures using the PuMP methodology described in this book. Overall, I highly recommend reading this book if you have the ability to influence objectives in your organization in any way.
