One of the best textbooks that I went to bought instead of rented!!

I went into the course that uses this book with very low expectations. However this book wowed me!! It may look boring but the authors 'spoke' in a way that even people who have trouble with compression (I do) will understand. I learned so much from this book andI wish I could give it 10 stars. Although there is a lot to read, it's definitely worth it!!

The Genius Who Invented the Jet Age

Aside from the British English coloquialisms and their maddening propensity to use plural verbs for singular nouns, this is an outstanding story of the man who fought a persistent lack of leadership, lack of vision, lack of support, and lack of honor by a bureaucratic and Machiavellian government. The Britsh government in World War II almost actively worked against the efforts of this genius, nationalized (read stole) the company he established to research and develop jet engines, gave his invention away to America, and gave him a paltry award for his efforts. The vision, leadership, guidance, and thankless labors of Sir Frank Whittle advanced the science of jet propulsion to unbelievable levels. His first patent on the engine existed before (and was probably reviewed by) Ohain in Germany, who although talented and gifted, did not co-invent the gas turbine engine. Aside from all that, this book is entirely engrossing and gives a non-biased account of the steps leading up to the invention of the gas turbine engine and the man whose genius, herculian work, and single-mindedness was totally responsible for ushering in the jet age. He should be praised and recognized much more than he has been by the British government - whose subject he was - as well as the US government who were enabled entry into the jet age much earlier than they would have, when they were given the invention for free (thanks to Hap Arnold for his foresight). Get the book, read it, and prepare to be amazed.

Jet Engine History Revealed!

If you are an aficionado of turbine engine history you owe it to yourself to find out how it all started. John Golley gives an exhaustive account of Frank Whittle's struggle to develop and perfect the first jet aero engine. The technical difficulties are discussed, but the emphasis is on Whittle's battles with the British government over private versus government control of patents, R&D funding, and development work. It also illustrates how war-time necessities can actually delay experimental work when priorities are placed on existing technology (i.e. piston engines). Well written with great detail on who, what, where, and when. Working in the engineering field myself, I would have liked to have more detail on the "nuts & bolts", but this is a minor complaint. There is more than enough detail in this area for the average reader.

Depressing story of beaurocracy at its worst...

I found the book interesting however if you're hoping for a good explanation of the JET engine, the developments and aircraft, this book is NOT for you. Not enough meat, diagrams or pictures. See instead other works like Klaus Hunecke's excellent book "Jet Engines".
If you're an avid historian and want to know how a visionary RAF officer/engineer worked himself to near death for little reward or advancement within a government system that tried hard to stymie him at every step, this is indeed a moving,fascinating and somewhat depressing book... they even gave his engines away to the Russians and Americans.

and a 1/2 stars Hot Steamy start to a new series

Sempia was born into a life where she was trained to please men and her virginity would be auctioned off to the highest bidder who take it and then claim her as his sex slave. She dared dreamed once that she would have a home of her own with the boy she held dear to her heart but she dismissed the thought as she knew it could never be.

On the day of the Auction Eterin waited to lay claim to what he had always known was his SEMPIA.

Eterin is not the boy Sempia remembered he is a seasoned warrior and a man that wants to possess her at any cost. He also has Pararyio in his life a man who eyes hides nothing especially the fact that he wants to share them both.

This book contains hot sex and adult language so have your fan ready.

My e-reader was very hot in my hand as I read Strength in Numbers. I guess that is to be expected with a trained sex slave as the heroine.

Reagan Hawk's story starts with a multi-player orgy scene complete with a four penised alien. This orgy plays out in front of an audience and is meant to showcase the de-flowering of our heroine, Sempia. (I know it's only 30 degrees outside. You may still need to turn on the A/C!) The sizzeling hotness of this book does not cool down. The man who takes Sempia's virginity also gains Sempia as his personal sex slave. Eterin, the childhood crush of Sempia, and Pataryio, Eterin's friend, work together to win Sempia and give her her freedom.

This story is very sexual and is surrounded by a really fun and entertaining story. Eterin can be an ass at times but Pataryio's charm equalizes it. There is a wonderful M/M/F love story with a D/s theme. As we all know the s is really the one in control and Sempia is exactly that. In control. You will love this story! I certainly did!

Tedious - but I guess memory leaks aren't supposed to be interesting

Tedious. That is the word I find best describe Valgrind 3.3. Either that, or I was unusually tired when I read this book. That said I haven't found any other book on the subject that gives you a good introduction to Valgrind. So by all means buy it. But I would also recommend you to buy "The Art of Debugging with gdb, ddd and eclipse" from No Starch Press.

The definitive guide to Valgrind

This book is a nice little reference to Valgrind. It covers pretty much the common stuff you'll use Valgrind for. It is the first book I've ever bought that is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. The book is also available online, but since it's a pretty inexpensive book, I like having a dead tree version. Plus, I'm sure my money is going to some good cause.

Valuable Resource for a Valuable Tool

Ordinarily I wince at the notion of a book dedicated to an open source tool. Usually online resources are abundant and a book only summarizes the information that is already freely available.

My thoughts are different for the Valgrind Develpment Team's manual for Valgrind 3.3. Admittedly, this is a very advanced tool for developers. Having used it myself I find the tool and the authors' in-depth explanation to the nuances and pitfalls of such advanced debugging invaluable.

The audience may be small for such a publication but if you do any development on Linux (and now Mac OS X and *BSD) then Valgrind should be part of your development and testing plan.
