Great information and setup, yet dense and hard to stay focused with.

I am reading this for my Global Political Economy course, it is brimming with interesting and profound debates, yet, the majority are wriitten in a manner that is less than enjoyable. Some get straight to the point, while others meander in the periphery; often failing to connect with a clear goal.

I recommend this to anyone interested in the subject and is willing to put in the time it takes to finish. Also, if you enjoy essays where 80% of the sentences use acronyms to describe multiple other acronyms, then this is the one for you.

great resource!

A great tool for students and professionals, this book is complete yet concise. Includes hand-drawing techniques as well as Illustrator instruction. Flats are shown next to finished garments to better understand how your sketch translates to 3d. You have all the basic garment shapes but also a visual dictionary of variations that I find can be inspiring for new designs. There is written instruction, but it is also very visual which is great for creative types like myself!

The CD-Rom is the icing on the cake: It includes body and garment templates that can be manipulated in Illustrator - a priceless, time-saving resource!

I have tried to demystify the 'art' of technical drawing in this book. It's really not difficult, if you follow my step by step technique. The back section of the book is incredibly useful, as it contains clear drawings of key generic styles - its a visual dictionary of clothes.
The drawings here are not 'fashionable' - they are stripped of all 'fashion' content, therefore serve as an indicator of generic style names.
Once you have mastered the skill of 'drawing' in half and are familiar with a basic fashion vocabulary - you may steam ahead and work in this flat format to design anything you want....
A combination of draping on the stand, pattern cutting and an ability to draw flats is vital to arm you with the key skills you will need to succeed in our competitive industry today.

It's very hard to find a book that clearly illustrates a ton of flats but this book is perfect. It shows both back and front and several different kinds of details. I have dozens of books and this is the only one I will reference for my flats.

Once rearranged to suit English sensibilities, though, those symbols lose their power, meaning, and coherence.

One of the Best Criticisms of Tolkien I Have Ever Read

In twenty some pages E. Michael Jones explicates some of the "failures" almost every reader of Tolkien feels upon reading Tolkien. To me, there was always the feeling, "Yeah, there's something great about this work, but.....am I missing something?" Yes, it turns out I was missing something big time. Jone's contends that Tolkien sought to reset his beloved "Northern Thing" in England to rescue it from the tainted embrace of Wagner. Wagner mined the Northern Thing for his own Ring Trilogy, Wagner was later a darling of the Nazis, Wagner thus tainted the Northern Thing with Antisemitism. Tolkien sought to remove this taint of racism from the Northern Thing by resetting it in England and retelling the mythos. Simultaneously, he would be gifting his beloved England with its' own foundation myth.

Jones argues that in resetting and retelling the Wagnerian mythos in England Tolkien stripped the story of its' deeper meaning. I would (and do) disagree, but the points he makes are cogent and thought provoking. Given the truncated nature of this "book" the insights are arguments contained within outshine (IMHO) volumes written by others. A truly groundbreaking work that led to me returning to reading Tolkien and developing a much deeper appreciation for all of Tolkien's work.

Much as you'd expect from yet another 'voice of the oppressed'

Not sure it matters that the author seems to understand very little about Tolkien when you consider the predictable anti-English tone of his pronouncements elsewhere and the meaningless phrases attributed to him such as 'ethnic Catholics'. Language-abuse is common among Irish-wordshipping American authors and assigning all the ills of the world to 'WASPS' no less so. Serious students of Tolkien or Wagner [axe-grinders excepted] are warned they will find little to interest them here. Do not confuse understanding the Ring with talking through it.
