Not an A7/A7R Handbook!

I am an experienced photographer, and main reason for me to purchase this book was to get a better description of the functions of my A7R camera than the badly written manual did. I have mixed feelings about this book since at least for me the book misses its main purpose to provide a detailed explanation with examples of the camera and its functions. Instead the book focuses more on photography in general, how to improve skills and how to shoot - which is something I don't need anymore. My feeling is that one part of the book including camera functions was written quickly after the Sony A7 series was released and merged with some other part written much earlier which covers photography in general. Bad idea! In detail, the book now totally misses the following:

a) Biggest con: Explanation with examples of how to set custom button functions (really important!) is totally missing!
b) Chapter 12 to use adapters for non-Sony lenses is very, very short and needs to be much more detailed. I wish the Metabones III adapter functions would have been better explained here than just quickly mentioned on one short page!
c) The bonus chapter after registration of the product is a joke. Nothing new in here for experienced photographers.
d) Some basic camera functions appear much later in the book under topics like portraits to explain the important AE Lock function. Again, the description of the camera menu and function comes really short!
e) Very short chapter for WiFi connectivity which is known as giving issues to many who want to connect their cellphones to the camera. Doesn't cover NFC connection at all.

Honestly, I found much better information in photo forums online than this book contained. In my opinion a well written user manual/book to explain the functions of the A7 and A7R still does not exist yet.

Good book for beginners but anyone buying an expensive camera like the Sony A7 is probably not a beginner. Hence, too much of the book is devoted to basics and not enough to explain thoroughly all of the camera's functions

Fails to Provide enough Camera Specific Information

Oddly, Smith attempts to infuse basic photography instruction such as basic composition, in a book which the title and buzz let us to believe was more about expanding upon the very poor Sony user manual. Worse, the camera specific information is error ridden and confusing. I returned it.

About the Author

One of the most prominent music journalists of the twentieth century, Timothy White wrote extensively on Marley, reggae, and Caribbean music and culture for Rolling Stone, The New York Times, and other leading publications. His close contact with Marley and his family and inner circle of friends led to White being granted access to private papers, photographs, and memorabilia. White died in 2002.

good but not great

I think that the background about Jamaican history provided in this book is interesting for those who have a wider interest in reggae and Jamaican culture but it does interrupt the flow of the biography about Bob. The author really could have edited down the amount of background info to good effect.

I am quite happy with the amount of info provided about Bob's childhood and adolescence. Very rewarding for painting a portrait of the artist. The only thing that was lacking was more color about the ten most interesting years of Bob's life when he was recording for Island! There are less than a hundred pages devoted to this period of Bob's life but more than a hundred devoted to the irrelevant BS that happened after he died. The most important time of his life was certainly glossed over.

That being said I still enjoyed the book (and this was my second time reading it) but if I ever re-read this book, I will remember to stop reading after the time when he died.

Extremely thorough

White wrote a very thorough book about Jamaica and Jamaican music. The Jamaica that Bob Marley grew up in. He provides a detailed account of the Jamaican culture before and during Bob Marley's rise to success. White also chronicles the unfortunate hangers-on that accumulated with Bob's success and blemished his later years. The songs i have been listening to by Bob Marley for the last 20 years now have new meaning after reading this book. Initially, I thought a song was about this or that, but with some background into Marley's tribulations at the time the song was written, that particular song has a whole new meaning. For a true Bob Marley fanatic such as myself, read this book if you want to know him from his boyhood to a man as well as the musician that broke barriers that were firmly positioned.

Bob Marley's Life

This book is more than just a biography of the late Bob Marley. It has a lot to offer the reader.

Jamaican history and the history of the Rastafarian religion are covered in detail. It's also a ghost story, where as the author tells us how the believe in the supernatural, influences everyday Jamaican life.

Marley, of course is the central character in the narrative. The other characters are highly interesting also. Bob's mother and father (the word father is used loosely) are central characters of the story, as are the member of the Wailers and his faithful wife, Rita

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Marley, the Caribbean or Reggae music.

Another grand, dense volume in the series

The paperback edition of this volume was divided into two separate books -- likely due to the number of pages and the limited strength of the softcover binding. Like the other volumes in the series it is authoritative and requires concentration to read. I like the histories by Rahn (battle of the Atlantic), Wegner (Case Blue), Stumpf (North Africa), but especially the discussion of strategy interspersed throughout. The information on the war in Asia and the Pacific should have been omitted given very limited German involvement there and the existence of more authoritative histories. Worth the money. You cannot get better quality nor more first class information per dollar spent.

Wilfred von Oven’s Nazism was linked with the career of Josef Goebbels, both as propaganda minister and as Nazi party regional leader of Berlin in the early 1930s. Von Oven’s experience was of the SA in Berlin, perhaps the most extreme of the SA branches. The book is most valuable when it recounts von Oven’s own experiences in the SA, his own views at the time and his personal encounters with Goebbels.

This fascinating history is an unapologetic defense of the SA against postwar revelations – the author presents a strongly pro-SA point of view. Von Oven remained unrepentant to the end: indeed, not long before his death he described his experience of Nazi rule as ‘paradise’.

Firstly, I'd like to say I have actually read this book.
It's in the "interesting little gems" section of my WW2 history shelf and I gave it four rather than five stars because I think it's a bit overpriced for 168 pages of text.
That said, Wilfried v Oven's memoirs give some fascinating insights into not just the SA, but the Germany of that time, at street level so as to speak. This study made a refreshing change from reading about grand political and/or military strategy, interesting though they also are.

Eleanor Hancock's Introduction is brief and mainly useful for the brief biographical/career data she gives about the author. He supplies more detail, born 1912 in Bolivia to a father who returned to fight and who fell at Flanders, mother who kept the children together despite extreme poverty/ the Allied food blockade on Germany. The 1919 Communist uprising, Weimar Republic, rise of National-Socialism and the SA are interwoven with many references to the personalities involved, including spies and others of varied, even changeable, political affiliation.
W. von Oven was a member of the SA for just one year. His motive for leaving was the revolt by Walther Stennes, which was associated with the conditions for all serving in the SA. This and the personality of Ernst Roehm and what actually happened and why on/before Bad Wiessee on 30 June 1934 were the main areas of interest for me. There is lots more, mainly in short references (for example I found the role of von Papen something to follow up).
He also served as adjutant to Dr J. Goebbels, while not being a member of the NSDAP; interesting little passage relating what JG's reaction is when told this ...
All in all an interesting account for any student of the first half of the bloody 20th century in Europe.

The book was pretty interesting but not really much new info and the author straetched the truth and white washed anything that would make the NAZIs look bad but then again he never claimed to be anything other than a non repentent NAZI.........
