Robbins' transition novel is an entertaining read

79 Park Avenue is the fast moving tale of Marja Flood who rises from poverty in Depression era New York City to become the mob backed successful madame in post WWII NYC. The novel is a transition work for Harold Robbins who in his early works focused on the struggles of growing up in Depression NYC to later on dealing more overtly with sexual themes with characters that are composites of famous individuals. In 79 Park Avenue, one character, Ross, can be seen as being based, in part, on famous mobster and founder of Las Vegas, Bugsy Siegel. Story is fast moving and you can't put the book down until it's done. While the story doesn't have the emotional depth and impact as his previous novel, A Stone for Danny Fisher, 79 Park Avenue is one entertaining read and a fine way to close what the author would later call his "Depression in New York Trilogy".

About the Author
Dr. George E. MacKinnon III, is presently the Vice President of Academic Affairs of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in Alexandria, VA. Prior to joining AACP he was Director of Global Health Economics & Outcomes Research at the headquarters of Abbott Laboratories. Dr. MacKinnon taught one of the first required courses in health economics and outcomes assessment in an academic pharmacy program in the 1990 s. He also assisted in the development of numerous pharmacist-medical practice initiatives as well as several post-graduate residency training programs in various practice settings over the years. He served as the Founding Editor of InetCE SM, an Internet-based continuing education publication from 1996-2006, has authored over 60 publications and has written three book chapters in texts related to medication use.

This book is amazing. The stats part should be a book on it's own. If you got "stats problems", this is pretty amazing stuff. better than actual states books. It is not an easy read, you have to think, but this is one I will keep and not resell because I will be using it!

My background is in epidemiology but i am working in a job where a lot of my work crosses over into the realm of pharmacoeconomics. I bought this book to brush up on some of the topics that are unique to that field. This was a good overview of what's "out there" but certainly would not prepare you for any applied use of these topics. That is not a bad thing, just understand what you're getting: a good intro to the basic topics of pharmacoeconomics and health outcomes research.

SHIGENOBU KOBAYASHI graduated from Hiroshima College of Technology and received his master's degree from Waseda University for his work in the field of color psychology. In 1966, he founded the Nippon Color & Design Research Institute (NCD) and has since become a leader in the field of color psychology. Kobayashi is the author of over 30 books on color in the Japanese language, with total sales in excess of 400,000 copies. Colorist is his third English-language publication, following A Book of Colors (1967) and Color Image Scale (1991). Kobayashi is also an active participant of the International Color Association (AIC) and a lecturer at the graduate school of the Musashi Institute of Technology.

THE NIPPON COLOR & DESIGN RESEARCH INSTUTUTE (NCD) acts as a color and design consultant firm to over 300 major Japanese corporations in fields as diverse as automobiles, home appliances, cosmetics, food, department stores, and home construction. Along with its theories on the psychology of color, the institute's Color Image Scale has been applied to numerous projects, and software based on the image scale has been developed.

Excellent

This is an excellent book for appreciating color in terms of narrowing down your preferences and of course your style, the grid is very well thought out and expressed in color and in words. It teaches how a colorist develops an effect by the choosing color. The only downside is that I wish the book was bigger format. I have all three of the author's books translated into English. There are many more in Japanese that I would enjoy reading in English.

Not quite what I expected

This is a designers reference and self help book. It was referred to me by one of my professors.

From what I can see, the book has an interesting concept to try and get a designer to "see".

Cons:
This is a small book and therefore the print and images within it are very small. It isn't a book that you would sit down to read cover to cover and even for reference, you had better get out the magnifying glass.

Color choices may not be easy but they are doable if you follow the process outlined in this book.
'Colorist' is a fascinating insight into how and why color affects us and our impressions of the world. It abounds with images from nature, architecture, art and products.
It is not a simple book to immediately apply but it offers a workable process which relies on an excellent understanding of what is required from the color scheme being prepared. By applying the book's principles it is possible to develop both appropriate color schemes and the rationale behind why these are the right color choices!
I felt that some of the language suffered from being translated from Japanese but on the whole the book is well written and follows a logical progression identifying the various elements that need to go into making successful color choices.
If color is an important element of your life, whether at home or work, this book will help you identify your color prejudices and the right color combinations for a particular project. Overall a good buy!

Every 8th page is blank!! Missing pages!!

This book is on the list for my daughter who is starting 3rd grade in the fall. The book may be great, but every 8th page is blank so the story is missing major parts! I just realized it when we started this book yesterday and the return is outside the window per the policy = lame!

Too much of a good thing?

The book was long for the 4 and 6 yr old Granddaughters, so I read it to them over 2 days. They were intrigued by the idea that someone could have "the chocolate touch"..........but is that really such a good idea? Then my 9 yr old Grandson read the book on his own.

An interesting new author and world...

Eventide is a story set in a very interesting paranormal world. As with the world we know, there is also slavery and characters working to get out and survive. The story begins right into the action. Jymaal, one of the main characters is considered a guard- one of the good guys and Chiago is your typical "bad guy" who is really good and misunderstood due to circumstances. Chiago is running for his life, and that of his good friend. When Jymaal catches them, he sees them as nothing more than two people who are down on their luck, yes, but he is duty bound to turn them in to the Gaurd. Once they are turned in, this is where the story really unfolds. We learn that there's a specific reason the two were chased- and not just because someone lost their pleasure slaves. As Jymaal and Chiago get to know each other, Jymaal starts to realize that he has deep feelings for Chiago- and not just lust. Chiago on the other hand is completely intrigued by Jymaal and though he pursues him at first, he is unsure if Jymaal could love someone like him or only feel contempt. As I was reading, I couldn't help thinking that if the characters would just TALK to each other, it would have saved a lot of heartache in the end. However, our two heroes do get their happy ending after all. I would like to know more about the world that has been created, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn’t sure at first if I would enjoy a futuristic paranormal romance, but I want to say I enjoyed it immensely. The story was easy to follow and the characters were easily captivating and sexy.

There was just enough intrigue to keep it interesting and enough sexual tension to keep me reading for hours. Jymaal’s character moved me right away with his smooth cool vibe and his attitude of “street” and “total cop.” And, who wouldn’t love Chiago’s character - a wounded warrior with heart of gold. I even liked Betina, even though she was in the way – LOL.

If you like your men big and sexy, which I do, this is the story for you. Nothing gets to me faster than imagining two big sexy guys getting down and dirty. Jerry Cole makes it easy to imagine because he gives strong descriptions of his characters. I forget which chapter, but the paragraph were he describes Jymaal’s dark chocolate skin and eyes and the warmth of his skin as it felt against Chiago’s cool pale complexion and blue eyes had me fanning myself. I could clearly see how these opposites would be attracted to each other.

It’s a classic story, told a in a new and bold way. I loved it! I received a free advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest & unbiased review.

Great story, really enjoyed

Great story, really enjoyed. I normally am not into vampire stories, this kept my interest all the way through. Unlike a lot of romance stories, this book had an actual plot line. Thank you "I received a free advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest & unbiased review."
