A Great Anthology

Over ten years ago, I took a course with Professor Barksdale, who at at the time was a traveling professor. The verison of this anthology that I have has Kinnamon as the co-editor/writer. What is extremely impressive about this collection is its variety; in addition to the standard fare of literature anthologies, poetry and fiction, this collection contains early blues lyrics and folk songs. Most of all, this collection is worthwhile due to the introductions to each author which are incredibly extensive, not just a few paragraphs like what one might see in a Norton, but pages of biography and background that set each work in a clear context and establishes a cohesive progression of the Black Writers of America.

Halsey has combined old picture-dictionary images, clip art, etchings, original drawings, and road maps, and her vivid spreads will have readers rubbernecking for a better view. The collages are uncluttered, yet filled with details on every page. Perfectly matched to the text, the artwork adds subtle humor along the way. Especially clever are the truck drivers. The "heavy truck" is loaded with peanuts and driven by an elephant. Readers will immediately appreciate the stork steering the delivery truck filled with babies, and the black-and-white zebra behind the wheel of the WZEB News van. Even the author and artist make an appearance, trucking down this busy highway. Children will turn this book every which way searching for familiar roads and towns on the many background maps, and they'll want to retrace the rhythmic and scenic route again and again. Blue trucks. Bringing-toys-to-you trucks." Halsey's colorful collage artwork uses a combination of road maps, images cut from old picture dictionaries, clip art, and original drawings to enliven the words. She creates spreads that will dazzle the eye and amuse children able to catch her subtle humor: a stork, who advertises day or night deliveries, drives a truck filled with babies; an elephant operates a flatbed overflowing with boxes of peanuts; and a lightning bug drives an electrician's vehicle. Halsey also varies the perspective of her spreads; most move from left to right, but some require turning the book sideways, and one circles around the page. Only one small glitch: the penguin driving the snowplow should rename his company the Antarctic (not Arctic) Plow Co. Great in real life...not so much in the digital version

We bought this after checking out the hardcover/board book from the library and my son loving it. It really loses something in the digital version, the screen keeps changing orientation. Not a fan. Not worth saving a couple dollars, buy the board book and love it - it's worth it.

About the Author
Mark Brinkley, b 1953, is best-known as the author of the Housebuilder's Bible, a project he has been working on since 1993. Prior to that he worked as a builder and developer, and the book is based around his experiences and observations. He also writes regular columns in Homebuilding & Renovating magazine, and maintains a blog -- House 2.0 -- on housing matters. Or you can follow his sporadic Twitter feed @slopingsite He went to Trinity College, Cambridge in the 1970s and then worked in a variety of alternative jobs and activities. He began building in 1980 when he carried out an eco-renovation on his first house, and went on to work on a number of projects, including building his own home in 1992. The project gave him the impetus to start analysing and writing about the building process and he has spent the past twenty years studying the way we build homes in Britain. He lives in Cambridge and, when he is not writing or researching, he spends time pottering about, walking the country tracks, playing a little golf from time to time, and worrying about climate change, to very little effect. He plays guitar rather badly and has a soft spot for checked shirts and country music, suspecting he may have been a hillbilly in a former life. "That's quite enough gratuitous detail. About the Author
Author M. Deborah Bowden received her MA in English from Ball State University. She taught English, literature, reading, and creative writing for 25 years, and also writing classes at Ball State University, Lima Technical College, and Clark Technical College. She helped develop Ohio high school state tests in English. Deborah was listed in “Who’s Who among America’s Teachers” in 1992 and 1994. She has been a guest speaker at writing workshops, and a story teller at various venues. She was an antique dealer from 1983 to 1990, and has bought and sold antiques for personal use since 1966. Deborah has contributed to three magazines: The Reflection Rag, Pen-It Magazine, & The Realm. Her writings have appeared in various anthologies. Beautiful book! It brings back such good memories of my youth. My sisters and I collected many of these dolls and proudly displayed them for many years. I can remember the eager anticipation of opening each box to see our newest addition.
