From Publishers Weekly
Syed, sportswriter and columnist for the London Times, takes a hard look at performance psychology, heavily influenced by his own ego-damaging but fruitful epiphany. At the age of 24, Syed became the #1 British table tennis player, an achievement he initially attributed to his superior speed and agility. But in retrospect, he realizes that a combination of advantages—a mentor, good facilities nearby, and lots of time to hone his skills—set him up perfectly to become a star performer. He admits his argument owes a debt to Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, but he aims to move one step beyond it, drawing on cognitive neuroscience research to explain how the body and mind are transformed by specialized practice. He takes on the myth of the child prodigy, emphasizing that Mozart, the Williams sisters, Tiger Woods, and Susan Polgar, the first female grandmaster, all had live-in coaches in the form of supportive parents who put them through a ton of early practice. Cogent discussions of the neuroscience of competition, including the placebo effect of irrational optimism, self-doubt, and superstitions, all lend credence to a compelling narrative; readers who gobbled up Freakonomics and Predictably Irrational will flock to this one. Review
“Sport is often used as an analogy for business, education, and personal relationships. In this insightful and entertaining book, Matthew Syed takes us a step deeper into the world of sports, showing us how much we can learn about our own behavior.” (Dan Ariely, New York Times bestselling author of Predictably Irrational)

“A cutting edge dissection—and ultimate destruction—of the myth of innate talent in the pursuit of excellence. Syed synthesizes his evidence with the precision of an academic, writes with the fluidity of a journalist, and persuades with the drive of a sportsman. Read this book.” (Mark Thomas, Professor of Evolutionary Genetics, University College London)

“Intellectually stimulating and hugely enjoyable at a stroke. . . . Challenged some of my most cherished beliefs about life and success.” (Jonathan Edwards, Olympic Gold Medal Winner in the Triple Jump)

“Compelling and, at times, exhilarating—Bounce explains high achievement in sport, business, and beyond.” (Michael Sherwood, Chief Executive, Goldman Sachs International)

From the Back Cover

Why have all the sprinters who have run the 100 meters in under ten seconds been black?

What's one thing Mozart, Venus Williams, and Michelangelo have in common?

Why are baseball players so superstitious?

We love to win and hate to lose, whether it's on the playing field, in the office, or in the classroom. In this bold new look at human behavior, award-winning journalist and Olympian Matthew Syed explores the truth about our competitive nature—why we win, why we don't, and how we really play the game of life.

Bounce reveals how competition—the most vivid, primal, and dramatic of human pursuits—provides vital insight into many of the most controversial issues of our time. From biology and economics to psychology and culture, from genetics and race to sports and politics, Bounce shows how competition provides a master key with which to unlock the mysteries of the world.

More useful than Outliers
By TMA
It's hard to resist comparing this book to Malcolm Gladwell's The Outliers. In The Outliers Gladwell helped spread the fame of the work of Anders Ericsson, FSU expert on how people acquire expert intelligence. Indeed, the phrase "10,000 hours" is now so ubiquitous it has become a cliche, although people often forget that it refers not just to practice but to STRUCTURED practice.

While The Outliers excels in its writing and infotainment value, Bounce seems more instructive. It's hard to finish Bounce and not feel like there is a lot more you could do if you just applied yourself. Syed mixes personal experience, anecdotes of others, and empirical data to hammer home the point that living with a "growth" mindset is richly rewarding.

Syed does an excellent job of explaining how some people continue to reach new thresholds in their pursuits while many others plateau early. I often give this book as a gift to nieces, nephews, and friends' children who are entering college, telling them I wish I could have read (and believed) this book when I was their age.

one of the most important books I've read
By Just Me
I read a lot, a lot, and this is one of the most significant books I have read. Anyone striving for high performance, in any field, as well as anyone raising or teaching children should read this book. I've been very interested in reading one of the books which are based, at least to a degree, on the work of Anders Ericsson and purposeful practise being more important than talent you are born with. Reviews of the other books, such as Talent Is Overrated by Geoff Colvin, The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle, and Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell have put me off. Each book seems to take a somewhat different view of the importance of various aspects that have been shown to lead to superior performance -- purposeful practice and opportunity (such as having a good coach available) being the primary aspects. Bounce also delves deep into the psychology of people who persist enough to become superior performers. There are many psychological points, which anyone can develop, which lead to someone bouncing back from difficulty and doing well. With practise being so important to superior performance, you must have persistance or you won't get in the practice.

Highly recommended. I've already given it as a gift and will be giving out more.

Starts a bit slowly, but stick with it
By klavierspiel
For the first few dozen pages Matthew Syed's book about "the science of success" feels derivative, with numerous quotes from Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers and its rehashing of the other author's "ten-thousand hour practice" rule. Syed also goes on to advocate strongly for nurture as opposed to nature, poking holes in the notions of innate talent and child prodigies, arguments very similar to Gladwell's.

Still, if one sticks with it, "Bounce" gains interest as it goes on: Syed points out that failure is not to be avoided, but is actually necessary for eventual success at a difficult endeavor; stretching one's boundaries and increasing one's abilities requires "purposeful practice," not just mechanical repetition of already learned skills. Along the way he also touches upon, in the chapter "Mysterious Sparks," Gladwell's "tipping point" concept, the placebo effect, superstition, and the (mistaken) idea that certain ethnic groups are innately superior in athletic ability. His discussion of "choking," anchored by a painfully self-revelatory description of his own worst choke as a champion table tennis player, is more succinct, and I think more useful, than Sian Beilock's entire recent book on the subject. The welter of topics that Syed touches upon makes for a rather scattered effect at times, as if the book were a collection of blog or journal articles welded together; yet his intelligence and his talent for choosing vivid examples makes "Bounce" a consistently entertaining and thought-provoking reading experience.

From Publishers Weekly
Though Karnow claims that U.S. imperialism in its former colony, the Philippines, has been "uniquely benign" compared to European colonialism, the evidence set forth in this colorful, briskly readable history undercuts that prognosis. He shows that a succession of U.S. presidents and administrators coddled the archipelago's 60 or so ruling families, perpetuating the feudal oligarchy that continues to this day, and widening the gap between rich and poor. Karnow, whose Vietnam: A History is a standard account of the American venture in Southeast Asia, draws intriguing parallels: the U.S.-Philippine war of 1898, much like the Vietnam experience, dehumanized U.S. troops, who looted and annihilated villages; ex-President Marcos, like South Vietnamese ruler Diem, presented Washington with the problem of how to deal with a client state that squandered its credibility. In Karnow's assessment, the "new prosperity" under Corazon Aquino has not touched the Filipino countryside or slums. Photos. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Philippine history is often described as 300 years in a (Spanish) convent and 50 years in Hollywood. Karnow, who worked for 30 years as a journalist in Asia, narrates the careers of several individuals who influenced the Philippines. His treatment of the indecisiveness of President McKinley over the issue of empire and of the egotistical General MacArthur make the work a definite purchase for libraries. Weaker in treatment is the post-independence period, where Karnow concentrates upon Marcos and Aquino, both of whom he knows. Particularly revealing is his account of the White House coming to terms with the Aquino election victory. Those who love swashbuckling history will enjoy this work.

Sobering Case Study of Exporting America
By T. Graczewski
From the valiant death of Ferdinand Magellan in the azure surf of Mactan in 1521 to the fall of Ferdinand Marcos at the hands of Cory Aquino and a disillusioned Reagan administration in 1986, Stanley Karnow, the venerable Asian correspondent for the Washington Post, traces the arc of the Philippines' long, tumultuous relationship with the West. Briskly-paced and engaging, "In Our Image" won the 1990 Pulitzer-prize for history and presents a balanced, yet sobering perspective on America's only traditional colonial experience.
Those looking for anti-American or anti-imperialist fodder will be sorely disappointed by Karnow's generally positive assessment of US policies in the archipelago. He praises the massive investment made in developing and improving the indigenous education system and industrial infrastructure, and frequently notes that American policies were far less exploitative and more politically liberal than any other colonial administration in history. Indeed, he argues that the Washington's voluntary grant of independence to the Philippines was nothing short of revolutionary at the time, and that the islands were actually more subject to American domination after independence in 1946 than before.
On the other hand, those seeking inspiration in how American democracy and industry can be successfully exported to different cultures will be equally disappointed with this case study. Most politicians today, liberal and conservative alike, bristle at the notion that some people or cultures are simply incapable of American-style democracy, and the freedom and justice that comes with it. Karnow, however, makes a strong case that dreams of self-duplication in the Philippines were doomed to fail in a society with an entrenched oligarchy, a powerful tradition of compadre loyalty, and an inherent respect for unabridged power. He notes, for instance, that both Marcos and his prime political opponent, the martyred Benigno Aquino, believed that only an all-powerful head of state in the mold of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew or South Korea's Syngman Rhee would be capable of making any positive difference in the Philippines.
Karnow is a brilliant writer and this book shows him at his best. Each chapter covers large swaths of American and Filipino history, so the narrative is far from comprehensive. Those seeking a detailed understanding of US colonial administration, the bloody and controversial fight against Aquinaldo and the Filipino insurgents, or the epic tale of the Bataan death march and MacArthur's reconquest of the Philippines would be well-advised to seek other, more focused works. However, for an introduction to the political history of the Philippines, her close and unusual relationship with the United States, and the experience of re-creating American institutions in lands unlike our own, this book is not to be missed.

Very Worthwhile Read....But
By FreeEM
I enjoyed the book and would recommend it for anyone with ties or a general curiosity about the Philippines. I've been married to a Filipina for six years and thought it would be good to know more about her culture and homeland. The book served this purpose well. My only complaint is that the author allowed his opinions too much representation. The book is of course his interpretation of US/Filipino history and so one would expect it to have his personal slant but I would have been appreciative if it had been inserted less forcefully so as to not distract me from the narrative. Besides that shortcoming and that the book is a bit dated now, I thought it very worthy of four stars.

Fallingwater Rising: Frank Lloyd Wright, E. J. Kaufmann, and America's Most Extraordinary House, by Franklin Toker

Fallingwater Rising is a biography not of a person but of the most famous house of the twentieth century. Scholars and the public have long extolled the house that Frank Lloyd Wright perched over a Pennsylvania waterfall in 1937, but the full story has never been told.

When he got the commission to design the house, Wright was nearing seventy, his youth and his early fame long gone. It was the Depression, and Wright had no work in sight. Into his orbit stepped Edgar J. Kaufmann, a Pittsburgh department-store mogul–“the smartest retailer in America”–and a philanthropist with the burning ambition to build a world-famous work of architecture. It was an unlikely collaboration: the Jewish merchant who had little concern for modern architecture and the brilliant modernist who was leery of Jews. But the two men collaborated to produce an extraordinary building of lasting architectural significance that brought international fame to them both and confirmed Wright’s position as the greatest architect of the twentieth century.

Fallingwater Rising is also an enthralling family drama, involving Kaufmann, his beautiful cousin/wife, Liliane, and their son, Edgar Jr., whose own role in the creation of Fallingwater and its ongoing reputation is central to the story. Involving such key figures of the l930s as Frida Kahlo, Albert Einstein, Henry R. Luce, William Randolph Hearst, Ayn Rand, and Franklin Roosevelt, Fallingwater Rising shows us how E. J. Kaufmann’s house became not just Wright’s masterpiece but a fundamental icon of American life.

One of the pleasures of the book is its rich evocation of the upper-crust society of Pittsburgh–Carnegie, Frick, the Mellons–a society that was socially reactionary but luxury-loving and baronial in its tastes, hobbies, and sexual attitudes (Kaufmann had so many mistresses that his store issued them distinctive charge plates they could use without paying).

Franklin Toker has been studying Fallingwater for eighteen years. No one but he could have given us this compelling saga of the most famous private house in the world and the dramatic personal story of the fascinating people who made and used it.

A major contribution to both architectural and social history.

From Publishers Weekly
An oddly "spiritual" agglomeration of rectilinear glass, concrete and stone masses set on a waterfall in the Pennsylvania woods, Wright's Fallingwater house made America fall in love with modernist architecture, according to this engrossing study. Architectural historian Toker (Pittsburgh: An Urban Portrait) approaches the building as a tense but fruitful collaboration between Wright's genius and the encouragement given it by his patron, Pittsburgh department store magnate E. J. Kaufmann, whom Toker credits with being "almost... the coarchitect" of the house. He gives a detailed, sometimes hour-by-hour account of Wright's planning process, the engineering hurdles surmounted in realizing his structurally daring design, the critical and public acclaim the house has elicited through the years and its impact on American culture in everything from Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead to motifs in suburban tract housing. He sets the story against an erudite but accessible history of the rise of modernism and Wright's antagonism toward the German Bauhaus and International Style architects, whose austere, mechanistic stylings he denounced even as he was adapting and humanizing them to suit American tastes. Toker sometimes makes too much, with little but speculation to go on, of Kaufmann's contribution to the project, at one point comparing the relationship between Wright and Kaufmann to Christ's bond with St. Peter. But the trenchant analysis of Wright's character and creativity, the often lyrical evocations of his buildings, and the opinionated but insightful overview of the modernist intellectual milieu of the 1930s make the book a wonderful exploration of the psychological and social meaning of architecture. From The New Yorker
When a house becomes a celebrated work of architecture, it tends to be treated as if it had sprung full-grown from the brow of its creator. Probably no house has been more subject to this myth than Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's extraordinary essay in horizontal space, which is perched above a waterfall in southwestern Pennsylvania. According to legend, Wright dallied for months after receiving the commission, then drew up the plans in just two hours, as his client, the Pittsburgh department-store magnate E. J. Kaufmann, was en route to Wright's studio to check on his progress. Toker makes quick work of this fiction, tracing the long, careful evolution of Wright's brilliant design. Most important, he tells the story of Kaufmann and his wife, and shows that the house was equally a reflection of these two strong-willed clients and their complex marriage.

From Booklist
Fallingwater, daringly cantilevered over a waterfall near Pittsburgh, may well be "the most famous private house in the world," as Toker asserts. Conceived and built in the years 1935-37, this stunning weekend retreat's high-profile owner (department-store tycoon Kaufmann) and celebrity architect (Wright) guaranteed it would never be a well-kept secret. Fallingwater has already been the subject of numerous books, but Toker adds important new scholarship in debunking or clarifying four myths: that E. J.'s son, Edgar Jr., was father to the project; that Wright drew the complete plans in a two-hour burst of creativity; that Wright demonstrated engineering genius in his design; and that the world "spontaneously acclaimed it as the crowning achievement of modern architecture." If these points seem like insider quibbles, Toker also provides histories of the site, the men (Wright was in desperate need of a comeback when he got the commission), the house's chaotic construction, and the manner in which it became a byword even to architecture neophytes. A must-read for Wright fans, it will also intrigue architecture buffs. Keir Graff

An Instructive Book That Establishes the Gold Standard
By Ernest Yanarella
This book is an extraordinary education in the many facets of early twentieth-century American life and international architecture that bear on a house in the forest that has become a lasting treasure for devotees of Frank Lloyd Wright, a testament to his genius, and a gift to the traditions from which it borrowed and synthesized. Its author-Franklin Toker-has evidently read, observed, and digested everything that could have possibly influenced the building of this world-famous house. Whether carefully detailing the twists and turns of modernist architecture, reviewing the "social vaulting" strategy of E.J. Kaufmann and his family among the regional elite in the Pittsburgh area or musing over the influence and legacy of Wright's anti-Semitism, whether explaining the structural features of the building itself, pointing to the progenitors of its design in Wright's earlier work and that of his some of his contemporaries or demonstrating how Wright beat the Internationalists at their own game, Toker is ever the entertaining instructor assiduously and judiciously separating out fact and fiction, complex verities and simplistic myths in order to tell a story that generously enlarges everyone in this venture. By the end of the book, the reader has been profoundly changed by Toker's odyssey, enriching both her or his outlook on this architectural masterpiece and appreciation for the genius who designed it. No less rewarding, the reader has been taken on a voyage through the life and times of a powerful and beguiling client who proved himself equal to the tasks of commissioning such a unique blend of modernist and vernacular elements and challenging its architect to meet the demands of producing a work that has drawn such popular and scholarly acclaim.

Interesting Read
By Constance Levi
Professor Toker has written an informative and interesting book not only explaining the history of Falling Water, but the dynamics between the merchant/architect Kauffman, and Frank Lloyd Wright the architect/merchant.
The book is well researched as is evident by all the tidbits of information not found in other previous works on this remarkable building.
I highly recommend this book either as a gift or for your own pleasure.

Architect's Review:
By J. Svaicer
I must say that as an architect who has been practicing for over 25 years, I have not read any book quite like this before that reaches so deeply into the creation of a master work such as Fallingwater. I have always "appreciated" FLW work but only recently have more fully understood what he has accomplished and created in built architectural works that to me borders on magical and genius at the same time. The glossy pictures alone only begins to reflect him as the gifted craftsman he represented. Living in Chicago I get to enjoy much of his work all the time. I'm still enjoying the book and must say your work here is amazing and a fitting tribute to an increbible individual and architect. Thanks for the experience. Jack Svaicer

Great Book, Great Author, One Small Complaint
By H. Grant
This book, like all of Arroyo's astrology books, is incredibly insightful and should be read by every astrologer (though it's probably best to tackle at the intermediate level rather than as a beginner). I don't share the author's take on every topic, but he is one of my favorite astrologers to read and I always benefit from his writing. He has made me a better astrologer in so many ways. My only real complaint is that Arroyo often skips a lot of information, saying the content has already been adequately covered by other authors, and including footnotes with their books and pamphlets. Since the book was first published in the 70's, a lot of those books/pamphlets are out of print and tough to find. This can leave some pretty big holes that are hard to fill more than 30 years later. In any case, this book (ALL of Arroyo's books) should be on every astrologer's shelf; whether your style is similar to his or completely different, you will definitely grow as an astrologer.

Astrology, Karma & Transformation by Stephen Arroyo
By Elizabeth Hazel
This book takes a positive, helpful view of the topic of karma as it can be understood through astrology. There is a particular focus on the outer planets, including a description of their aspects and transits. In each section, Arroyo moves from the general concepts to a more specific cook-book listing of the planets. He discusses karmic relationships through analyzing synastry and progressions, and includes a special chapter on the Ascendant and Midheaven axes. Arroyo refers to Edgar Cayce's view of reincarnation and planetary influences on a particular incarnation. This book provides an exceptionally accessible viewpoint, in the sense that it approaches karma as patterns to be recognized through the astrological counseling process, rather than encouraging specious speculation about specific past lives. A book recommended for astrologers who seek to include an evolutionary spiritual element in their style of interpretation without sounding like Madame Lazonga.
