He also served as the lead gameplay engineer for KIXEYE's War Commander. Adrian has also taught at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in a number of different departments over the years, covering Maya, web development, and game programming.

He is currently the cofounder and president of Jamwix, a game and media start-up. So far, Jamwix has released CineMagic: Hollywood Madness, a mobile game for iOS and Android as well as the first feature-length movie for virtual reality (The Banshee Chapter: Oculus Rift Edition).

Adrian holds a master's degree in Fine Arts from the University of California, Irvine, from the Arts, Computation, and Engineering department, and has served as a juror for IndieCade, the international festival of independent gaming, for a number of years.

    This collection of Thai cooking lore, history and recipes can be as daunting as it is comprehensive. A description of the country, its various socioeconomic groups (called muang) and its culinary history is lengthy and perhaps a little too in-depth. While Thompson's enthusiasm for his subject is palpable, readers may be anxious to get to the actual recipes, but the first one does not appear for nearly 200 pages, after an essay on Thai superstitions and a glossary of ingredients such as bai yor, a tobacco-like plant, and dried lily stalks. The recipes are thorough and authentic, and while they call for many items that may be hard to find, Thompson good-naturedly provides alternatives to most of them. Thailand's signature strong flavors are in evidence in dishes such as Bream Simmered with Pickled Garlic Syrup and a Salad of Pork, Young Ginger and Squid. Recipes are divided sensibly into soups, curries, salads and the like, but one chapter simply titled "Menus" contains various dishes that work together to form a traditional Thai meal (menus such as one that includes Prawn and Lemongrass Relish; Egg Mousse with Pineapple, Corn and Salted Duck Eggs; and Deep-Fried Bean Curd with Crab, Pork and Spring Onions are intriguing). A chapter on snacks and street foods offers additional tasty choices such as Rice Cakes with Chili, Prawn and Pork Sauce and Egg Nets, lacy crˆpe-like wrappers created by drizzling beaten egg into a hot wok that are stuffed with a pork and shrimp mixture. The dessert chapter also provides instructions for creating Smoked Water, flavored using a special candle with a wick on both ends.

Somehow, he also found the time to write this huge, exhaustively researched book, focusing especially on Thai cuisine of the late 19th century, when, he believes, Thai cooking "reached an apex." Although he explores regional and peasant cooking as well, the only recorded recipes of the time are from the upper classes and those associated with the Siamese court, and Thompson has translated and adapted many of those recipes. The first section of the book provides detailed cultural and social history and a guide to the regions and regional cuisines of Thailand. Then a detailed glossary of ingredients and a guide to techniques introduce the hundreds of recipes. These are grouped into chapters on relishes, soups, curries, salads, and sides, followed by one of menus with recipes. Chapters like "Food Outside the Meal"-snacks or street foods and desserts-complete the book. Su-Mei Yu's Cracking the Coconut is an excellent introduction to Thai home cooking, but Thompson's culinary history/cookbook is unique and will be an important purchase for any Asian cookery collection.

    Not quite the recipes you would expect

    I have not cooked anything from this book yet. My review is just on the collection of recipes itself. Reading the intro, the author says that he found these recipes in cookbooks and memorial books. I read through the recipes in the book to my mom (my parents are both Thai). She only recognizes about half of the recipes. Thinking about where the recipes came from, if I found a recipe in a memorial book (little booklets about the life of the deceased given out at Thai funerals), I would think that this is someone's personal recipe. It may not be a dish that is known outside the person's family. It would be like a foreigner who finds a recipe for a cookie that had walnuts and dried cranberries in them, then compiled a big cookbook about American food and sold it in his country. If you didn't know what some of the common American cookies are you would think you found the recipe for an American cookie (it is and it isn't). The recipe does include Thai ingredients but some of the recipes are very obscure. One positive that I can think of is that this book includes recipes for sauces and condiments.

    If you are looking for a thai cookbook with recipes for popular dishes found in thai restaurants, you are better off buying his Thai Street Food book. (This book includes only a few popular thai dishes. However, there are a good amount of recipes for sauces and condiments in here). If you want to go off the beaten path, this book is for you.

    100% authentic Thai recipes

    Talk about a phonebook! This cookbook has it all (Thai recipes that is). Be aware that the recipes are fairly complex and require a prior knowledge of Thai cooking (I refer to it as my 'blackbelt' Thai cookbook), but make no mistake these recipes are very authentic (can't say the same for 90% of Thai cookbooks I've seen) and there are an endless amount of recipes too choose from.

    I would have liked for the recipes to have a few more details in them, and more pictures of the dishes too. However, I bought this book because i wanted authentic Thai food recipes and it certainly does not disappoint in that regard.

    It is daunting. Not easily approachable for the impatient. There is no instant gratification to be found within these pages.

He holds a PhD in military ethics from Macquarie University, Australia, and was formerly a Naval Officer in the Royal Australian Navy.     Not What I Expected

    "Pleasure Unwoven: A Study Guide to the Film" led me to expect something more closely keyed to the film, rather than something more in the way of general background with only a few evocative discussion-starter questions. I was hoping for something more pedantic that I could use with substance abuing clients before and after viewing the film.

    Not very helpful

    I got this to help teach clients and their families how addiction works, as for individuals with limited scientific knowledge, the movie can be overwhelming. (Props to the movie though, it was great.) This didn't offer much written breakdown of the important concepts or any study materials. I expected this to have activities, worksheets, or at least written explanations of the main concepts. There were about 3-4 activities in the book but they did not really illustrate the major concepts. I wanted to use this to help break down a complicated set of ideas to individuals who are beginning their recovery, and have limited cognitive function/attention span due to several years of drug/alcohol use. Especially compared to the movie, I was very disappointed.

    I cannot say enough about this film, and the workbook is helpful for giving those visual reminders long after my group has seen the video. This film has set a new high bar by being a more adult level of format, and taking a positive approach to the topic of addiction as a brain disease.

It centers on Ximen Qing, a wealthy, young, dissolute, and politically connected merchant, and his marriage to a fifth wife, Pan Jinlian, literally "Golden Lotus." In her desire to influence her husband and, through him, control the other wives, concubines, and entire household, she uses sex as her main weapon. The Golden Lotus lays bare the rivalries within this wealthy family while chronicling its rise and fall. It fields a host of vivid characters, each seeking advantage in a corrupt world.
    The author of The Golden Lotus is Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng, whose name, a pseudonym, means "Scoffing Scholar of Lanling." His great work, written in the late Ming but set in the Song Dynasty, is a virtuoso collection of voices and vices, mixing in poetry and song and sampling different social registers, from popular ballads to the language of bureaucrats, in order to recreate and comment mordantly on the society of the time.
    This edition features a new introduction by Robert Hegel of Washington University, who situates the novel for contemporary readers and explains its greatness as the first single-authored novel in the Chinese tradition. This translation contains the complete, unexpurgated text as translated by Clement Egerton with the assistance of Shu Qingchun, later known as Lao She, one of the most prominent Chinese writers of the twentieth century. The translation has been pinyinized and corrected.

    A lingering Chinese erotic life

    Golden Lotus is a wonderful story if you want to discover the forbidden topic of ancient Chinese erotic life style. It is the only Chinese book I have read so far that describes the love making scenes in detail. It is about the traditional Chinese customs and how to make friends and deal with your enemies. And also, if you love Chinese food, the story makes your mouth water as well as it is filled with banquets and tea sessions. The story is slow and filled with wonderful human emotions. If you want to know more about the traditional Chinese life style, literature, customs and culture, this is the book for you, go and get it and you will have so much fun!

    The latin parts have been translated!!!!!

    When I first read this book, the racy parts were all written in latin. The characters would meet alone somewhere and then the text would suddenly drift of into the vulgate.... It was fun to imagine what they were doing, and your imagination could run wild. Now you can read what really went on when the book got too sexy for the Victorians. A lot of fun to read.

    Heavy going, but great if you have perseverance

    This is a classic novel of Ming dynasty China. It paints an amazing picture of everyday life - the domestic strife, the courtiers and sycophants, the corruption, the use of pressure (subtle or otherwise), all within a Confucian framework. While both the heroine and hero ultimately die tragically, the novel offers hope for the future.
    And yes, there is a fair amount of graphically-described sex, so if you are not happy with this, don't buy the book. But it is not pornography. It is a realistic picture of what life was like in those days, and a varied sex life was deemed normal and healthy, and not something to be worried about. The book does make the point that excess in sex as in anything else is ultimately destructive, and invites the reader to learn the moral lesson.
    The non-Pinyin proper names will confuse some readers, and there are few notes for clarity. Also the habit of giving numbers to frequently-ised names is unfriendly to the modern reader, though it may help to distinguish between characters. Put if you can cope with this, and are prepared to put up with the leisurely pace of the Chinese gentleman, this is a fine book.
